Hello Newcastle Families! I am writing to you amidst my own 4 children (4, 9, 11, and 14 years old) on my living room couch. I hope this finds you safe and secure wherever you might be. One of the things I have been thinking about during this time away from you all is how, without feeling overwhelmed, can we stay engaged. Weekly your student’s teacher should be providing opportunities and activities for kids to work on if they choose. My intent in writing is to provide some engagement activities you might find helpful this week. Then, in subsequent eNews I will try and provide weekly ideas. This week I would like to focus on Science. My kids and I started tuning into a live show by one of our favorite science Youtubers, Mark Rober. He usually produces one show a month, but due to our current circumstances he is giving live shows Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:00pm. Aside from excellently demonstrating the scientific method and the engineering process, the shows are engaging and informative. I invite you to take a look. There is also a great radio program produced by NPR called Science Friday, airing every Friday from 11am - 1pm.You can also go on the website and pick and choose past episodes. When I was teaching in the science and tech program we would listen to various episodes while practicing taking notes and then talking about what we were hearing and thinking. This was always a great way to practice critical listening without the video feed! Lastly, there is a wonderful podcast that I listen to in the car with my kids. It is called BrainsOn. The content is geared directly towards elementary school age kids. It is easy to pick and choose the topics we might be interested in. Again, this is a great way to practice student’s listening skills. It is a different set of skills when there is not video feed to watch. If you have time, I would encourage you to listen along with your child. Ask questions and share your personal ideas and wonderings. So, if you are looking for other ways to engage your child this week, join in on these weekly science shows and then invite your own child, if they were interested, to think of their own science question or topic they might like to investigate a little further. They could:
